Freeland profile

Living in Freeland

Freeland is a very small coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of Washington. With a population of 2,252 people and two associated neighborhoods, Freeland is the 208th largest community in Washington.

Housing costs in Freeland are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don't compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in Washington.

Of important note, Freeland is also a town of artists. Freeland has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Freeland’s character.

Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 24.17% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Freeland has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Freeland has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Freeland than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Freeland may be for you.

One of the nice things about Freeland is that it is nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.

One downside of living in Freeland, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 35.38 minutes every day commuting to work. However, local public transit is widely used. For those who would prefer to avoid driving entirely and leave their car at home, it may be an option to use the transit instead.

Even though Freeland is a smaller town, it has many people who hop on public transportation – mostly a ferryboat for their daily commute to work. Typically, these people are commuting to good jobs in the surrounding cities.

The citizens of Freeland are very well educated compared to the average community in the nation: 38.62% of adults in Freeland have a bachelor's degree or even advanced degree.

The per capita income in Freeland in 2018 was $50,773, which is wealthy relative to Washington and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $203,092 for a family of four.

The people who call Freeland home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Freeland residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in Freeland include German, Irish, English, Swedish, and Scottish.

The most common language spoken in Freeland is English. Other important languages spoken here include Arabic and Japanese.
