Darien is a very small coastal city (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of Georgia. With a population of 1,558 people and two associated neighborhoods, Darien is the 291st largest community in Georgia.
Of important note, Darien is also a city of artists. Darien has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Darien’s character.
Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 7.67% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.
It is a fairly quiet city because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Darien has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Darien has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Darien than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Darien may be for you.
One of the nice things about Darien is that it is nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.
In terms of college education, Darien is somewhat better educated than the 21.84% who have a 4-year degree or higher in the typical US community: 26.23% of adults 25 and older in the city have at least a bachelor's degree.
The per capita income in Darien in 2022 was $31,929, which is upper middle income relative to Georgia, and middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $127,716 for a family of four. However, Darien contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.
Darien is an extremely ethnically-diverse city. The people who call Darien home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Darien residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in Darien include English, Irish, German, Estonian, and Italian.
The most common language spoken in Darien is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Italian.
