Patchogue is a medium-sized coastal village (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of New York. With a population of 12,337 people and 11 associated neighborhoods, Patchogue is the 154th largest community in New York. Housing costs in Patchogue are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don't compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in New York.Unlike some villages where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Patchogue is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Patchogue is a village of professionals, sales and office workers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Patchogue who work in office and administrative support (12.34%), healthcare (10.32%), and management occupations (9.54%). One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 7.48% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes. Patchogue is also nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Such areas are often places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery. One downside of living in Patchogue, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 32.00 minutes every day commuting to work. However, local public transit is widely used. For those who would prefer to avoid driving entirely and leave their car at home, it may be an option to use the transit instead. Despite being a small village, Patchogue has a lot of people using the train to get to and from work every day. Most of these people on the train are using it to get to good jobs in other cities. The population of Patchogue is very well educated relative to most cities and towns in the nation, where the average community has 21.84% of its adult population holding a 4-year degree or higher: 35.30% of adults in Patchogue have a bachelor's degree or even advanced degree. This equates to an annual income of $234,492 for a family of four. However, Patchogue contains both very wealthy and poor people as well. Patchogue is an extremely ethnically-diverse village.
